Alfried Krupp student scholarship holders reflect on their internships abroad at Villa Hügel

The geographical alphabet of the ‘Alfried Krupp Student Scholarships for Internships Abroad’ of the class of 2025 ranged from ‘A for Albania’ to ‘T for Turkey’. 35 students from Essen were able to gain their first practical work experience as part of a four-week internship. This year, they travelled to ten different countries in Europe and Asia. Last week, this year’s scholarship holders met at Villa Hügel to talk about their diverse experiences.

The Krupp Foundation’s programme is run in cooperation with the “Verein zur Förderung der Zusammenarbeit von Schulen und Wirtschaft Essen e.V.“ (Association for the Promotion of Cooperation between Schools and Business in Essen) and is advertised annually at the start of the school year.

For 27 years, the Krupp Foundation has been enabling school students in Essen to do internships abroad every year – more than 1,200 young people have already taken advantage of this opportunity. In addition to the four-week internship, comprehensive coaching is a central component of the educational programme: before the internship, they complete a course in business English and an intercultural seminar on ‘Business Behaviour Abroad’. On their return, they take part in a job application training programme. The programme is coordinated by “Essener Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH” (EWG).

The next round of applications will start on 18 August 2025 and runs until 29 September 2025. The programme is open to students in the 9th and 11th or 12th grade of schools in Essen. The internship will take place from 23 March to 17 April 2026. Further information will be announced shortly.
