Applications open on 26 September for “Berthold Beitz Student Trips to Berlin”

Launched in 2023 by the Krupp Foundation together with the City of Essen and in cooperation with the Jewish Museum Berlin, the “Berthold Beitz Student Trips to Berlin” program is entering its third round. Starting on 26 September, Berthold Beitz’s birthday, school classes from Essen can once again apply for a trip to Berlin which, in the spirit of German-Jewish understanding, includes a visit to the Jewish Museum Berlin as well as other sites of remembrance of the Nazi dictatorship. The Foundation is funding this three-year program with €300,000. Each year, ten school classes can travel to Berlin.

The program honors the life and work of Berthold Beitz (1913–2013), the long-time chair of the Krupp Foundation, who saved the lives of hundreds of Jewish people during the Second World War and was recognized at Yad Vashem as a “Righteous Among the Nations.” German-Jewish understanding remains one of the most important priorities of the Foundation’s work to this day.

Young people are particularly exposed to disinformation through manipulative communication in the digital sphere; this poses risks for their understanding of democracy as well as for the development of moral courage. The program is intended to help sharpen historical judgment—in line with the necessity of engaging with the past in order to shape the future.

Applications for the 2026/2027 school year may be submitted by 27 March 2026 via email to: wettbewerb@schulen.essen.de
