Stanford students visit Villa Hügel

As part of their stay in Germany, around 14 students from Stanford University visited Villa Hügel in Essen last Thursday. The visit took place in the context of the “Krupp Internship Program for Stanford Students in Germany”, which has been supported by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation since 1982. The aim of the program is to sustainably strengthen the transatlantic exchange between young academics from the USA and Germany.

The American guests were welcomed at Villa Hügel by Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Ursula Gather, Chairwoman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and Dr. Michaela Muylkens, member of the Board of Directors. A guided tour of Villa Hügel was followed by lunch, which provided an opportunity for personal discussions.

A visit to the Essen-based ZukunftsZentrumZollverein – Triple Z for short – was then on the agenda. There, the students got to know the start-ups Asdro, docport and vGreens and gained insights into current developments in the fields of digitalization, medicine and sustainable agriculture. The day was rounded off with a guided tour of the exhibition “21×21 – Die RuhrKunstMuseen auf dem Hügel”. On Friday, the group was able to take a look behind the scenes at ThyssenKrupp Steel’s steelworks and Carbon2Chem in Duisburg.

To date, more than 1,400 students have taken part in the scholarship program and over 600 companies, research facilities and institutions have provided internships. The students spend a total of six months in Germany: they spend three months studying at Stanford University in Berlin and then complete a three-month internship in a German company or institution. This gives them not only an academic education, but also a practical insight into social and economic life in Germany. 14 students from Stanford University visited Villa Hügel in Essen last week as part of their stay in Germany.
