Alfried Krupp Student Scholarship holders shared their experiences of their internships abroad at Villa Hügel
As part of the ‘Alfried Krupp Student Scholarships for Internships Abroad’ programme, 35 school pupils from Essen visited Villa Hügel to share their experiences of their four-week stays abroad. From Ireland to Spain and Laos, the participants were able to gain their first professional experience and learn about a different culture. They were working in sectors such as tourism, finance and industry.
Since 1997, the Krupp Foundation has been funding internships abroad for pupils in Essen every year, and more than 1,200 young people have already taken advantage of this opportunity. In addition to the four-week internship, comprehensive coaching is a key component of the educational programme: before the internship, they complete a course in business English as well as an intercultural seminar on the topic of ‘Business Behaviour Abroad’. Upon their return, they take part in job application training.
The Krupp Foundation’s programme is run in cooperation with the Association for the Promotion of Cooperation between Schools and Industry in Essen (Verein zur Förderung der Zusammenarbeit von Schulen und Wirtschaft Essen e.V.) and is coordinated by the Essen Economic Development Agency (Essener Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH (EWG)); new applications are invited annually at the start of the school year.
The next application round opens on 24 August 2026 for an internship abroad in 2027. The programme is open to pupils in grades 9, 11 and 12 at schools in Essen. Further information on the application process will be announced shortly.
