Kindheit auf dem Hügel: The Krupp Historical Archive’s Series “Essay and Archive” series enters its fifth round
The Historical Archive Krupp is continuing its publication series “Essay and Archive,” now in its fifth generation, with another volume. In the new publication “Kindheit auf dem Hügel”, historian Prof. Dr. Gunilla Budde explores the complexity of growing up on the Hügel, using the example of the children of Gustav and Bertha Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. The childhood of the five brothers and two sisters oscillated between responsibility and discipline, luxury and seclusion, as well as private moments of normality.
Prof. Dr. Gunilla Budde is Professor of German and European History at Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. Her research focuses include the history of the European bourgeoisie, women’s and gender history, and postwar German history. Most recently, she published a biography of Jutta Limbach.
About “Essay and Archive”
Initiated in 2020, the series reflects the history sedimented in ten kilometres of documents, photographs and objects in the Krupp Historical Archive. Further volumes are planned, for which authors with specialized expertise will be recruited and who will create unexpected and previously unknown references to the Krupp cosmos.The fascinating wealth of sources in the Krupp Archive makes it possible for the volumes to unfold a panorama of a wide range of topics—from cultural and economic history to architectural, political, and everyday history. The aim is to offer both a specialist audience and historically interested readers a source-based yet engaging read.
