Winners of the school competition ‘Shalom – Jewish Life Today!’’ ” funded by the Krupp Foundation, were honoured at the North Rhine-Westphalia State Parliament
On Monday, the awards ceremony for the school competition “Shalom – Jewish Life today! („Shalom – jüdisches Leben heute!)”, supported by the Krupp Foundation, took place in Düsseldorf. Under this year’s theme, “The colourful diversity of Jewish holidays”, pupils from all types of schools in North Rhine-Westphalia, in grades 5 to 10, were invited to explore Jewish culture. More than 2,200 pupils submitted a total of 450 projects.
The competition enables pupils to explore the traditions, customs and significance of Jewish holidays, thereby developing a better understanding of Jewish life today. The participants presented their work in creative formats such as videos, games, podcasts, calendars, essays and other artistic projects.
“Since its foundation, the Krupp Foundation has been committed to supporting German-Jewish understanding. The fact that so many young people have now taken the opportunity, as part of the ‘Shalom’ competition, to actively engage with Jewish history and culture presents a great opportunity to strengthen understanding and tolerance in our interactions with one another,” said Dr Michaela Muylkens, member of the Executive Board of the Krupp Foundation.
The “Shalom – Jewish Life today!” competition is held under the patronage of Minister-President Hendrik Wüst and is organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Anti-Semitism Commissioner for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
