Ursula Gather awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Greifswald
Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Ursula Gather, Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the Krupp Foundation, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Greifswald on 26 June 2026. She was honoured for her outstanding academic achievements in mathematical statistics and her exceptional contributions to the promotion of science and research in Greifswald. The ceremony, held in the main hall of the University of Greifswald, was the highlight of a day of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
With around 160 scientific publications and more than 4,000 citations of her work, Prof. Dr Ursula Gather is a world-renowned figure in mathematical statistics. Furthermore, as a science manager, supervisory board member and chairwoman of the board of trustees, she has been one of the defining figures in the German science system for decades.
The Rector, Prof. Dr Katharina Riedel, said: “Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees Ursula Gather guides the development of the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg – and thus also the development of our research hub – with great foresight, clarity and reliability. This is of the utmost value to our university. The Alfried Krupp Institute of Advanced Studies strengthens our key research areas, creates space for new ideas and brings researchers from all over the world to Greifswald. It has an impact on the university, the city and the region, and fosters international networks.”
