Ilinca Fechete and Andrzej Steinbach receive scholarship from the Krupp Foundation for Contemporary German Photography
The Krupp Foundation, in collaboration with the Photographic Collection of the Museum Folkwang, is awarding two scholarships for Contemporary German Photography. An international jury selected from more than 300 applications, the project proposals ‘Oram Littoris Primi Lego’ by Ilinca Fechete and ‘Gesichtsmaske’ by Andrzej Steinbach. Fechete and Steinbach will each receive 13,000 euros to realise the realise the submitted projects.
Ilinca Fechete (*2002 in Târgu Mureș, Romania, lives in Munich)
In her transmedia research, Fechete focuses on the various material qualities of papers that are no longer produced today. Following extensive research with manufacturers and distributors, she has gathered small quantities and remaining stock for her work. Through manual processes and with the aid of a homemade printer, she created the multi-part work and research cycle ‘Oram Littoris Primi Lego’. Fechete, who graduated from Hito Steyerl’s class in 2025, will use this award-winning project proposal to realise a new, experimental, photographic ‘book work’. This is to be created both as a physical, tangible object and in the form of derived, unique works for the exhibition space.
Andrzej Steinbach (*1983 in Czarnkow, Poland, lives in Berlin)
For several years, Steinbach has been exploring the semantics of photographic images through his photographic and curatorial projects. Using forms that are at times imbued with ambivalence, he encourages his artistic examination of how we view individual images, sequences and series of bodies, postures and objects. What expressions and attributions can be found in different ways of depicting figures and gestures? In his award-winning project ‘Gesichtsmaske’, Steinbach turns his attention to the photographic portrait and explores the question of whether the human face in mechanical images might follow the technical logic of machines.
Members of this year’s jury were:
– Sophia Greiff, Co-Head of Programme and Curator at C/O Berlin
– Sophie Haslinger, Director of the Fotomuseum Winterthur
– Takashi Homma, photographer Tokio
– Dr. Ingomar Lorch, Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, Essen
– Thomas Seelig, Head of the Photographic Collection, Museum Folkwang, Essen
The Krupp Foundation has been awarding scholarships for the promotion of Contemporary German Photography since 1982 in cooperation with the Photographic Collection of the Museum Folkwang. The funding programme is aimed at photographers who develop a photographic project over a longer period of time independently of a commissioned work.
